چکیده

If a sol of colloidal ferric hydroxide is added to sea water, or if the hydroxide is formed in sea water by adding a solution of an iron salt, the aggregated molecules of hydroxide coalesce to form flocs which fall rather rapidly as a precipitate. When several thousand mg. of iron are added per cubic metre of sea water, flocculation is immediate; on adding 300-500 mg. Fe per m.3 in sufficiently dilute solution (10-4 or 10-5 M) flocculation and sedime.ntation may be delayed for several days. Although this quantity is over twenty times as much as ordinarily occurs in the sea, it seemed rather remarkable that the waters of the open ocean could maintain any material quantity of ferric hydroxide in suspension, since it would there have many years in which to flocculate and fall.

The Cellular Transformation of Injected Colloidal Iron Complexes into Ferritin and Hemosiderin in Experimental Animals

As revealed by electron microscopy and electron diffraction, the physical state of ferric hydroxide micelles contained in iron-dextran, saccharated iron oxide, and hydrous ferric oxide ("ferric hydroxide") differs notably from the state of the ferric hydroxide in ferritin or hemosiderin. By virtue of this difference one can trace the intracellular transformation of colloidal iron, administered ...

Hydrolyzing metal salts as coagulants*

Aluminium and ferric salts are widely used as coagulants in water and wastewater treatment. They are effective in removing a broad range of impurities from water, including colloidal particles and dissolved organic substances. Their mode of action is broadly understood in terms of essentially two mechanisms: charge neutralization of negatively charged colloids by cationic hydrolysis products an...

Application of Granular Ferric Hydroxide in Removal of Nitrate from Aqueous Solutions

The aim of this study is to investigate the nitrate adsorption on granular ferric hydroxide (GFH). The effect of factors such as initial concentration of nitrate, pH, contact time, and adsorbent mass were determined. The study was done in laboratory–scale in which synthetic nitrate solutions in a batch reactor were placed in contact with the adsorbent to model adsorption kinetics. It was found ...

Citrate influences microbial Fe hydroxide reduction via a dissolution-disaggre- gation mechanism

Microbial reduction of ferric iron is partly dependent on Fe hydroxide particle size: nanosized Fe hydroxides greatly exceed the bioavailability of their counterparts larger than 1 μm. Citrate as a low molecular weight organic acid can likewise stabilize colloidal suspensions against aggregation by electrostatic repulsion but also increase Fe bioavailability by enhancing Fe hydroxide solubility...
